It was a big deal in the studio when the office moved from 2D to 3D design tools. Foothill High School Annex for the Santa Clara County Office of Education was one of the first projects we produced construction documents for in ArchiCad, a prominent BIM software. The drawings happened several years ago and now we are finally seeing the fruits of that labor. The building is under construction and it is pretty exciting watching it go up.
Lindsey works at Weston Miles Architects as a sustainability coordinator and part-time blog and website guru, among other tasks. She is formally educated in passive energy conservation and design, but is an environmental enthusiast in pretty much all areas one can be. 
Lindsey is right it was quite a transition to go from 2-d to 3-d drafting. but more and more we realized that the opportunity to design and coordinate our drawings in a 3-d model was really incredibly helpful. It was also helpful for our clients to be able to see what their project would look like. It is very hard to envision the entire space from a flat drawing and the ability to actualy not just render, but walk through the space, getting an idea of the volume of the space really helps in the decision making process.
