San Jose, CA
Weston Miles designed a new off-campus addition
to the University - the International and Extended Studies Building,
located
in the
heart of downtown San Jose.
The building was originally constructed as a warehouse whose roof
and interior were destroyed by a fire in 1996. WMA stripped the
gutted building to its shell and completely remodeled it. New
brick interiors, as well as walls, windows, lighting, mechanical
units,
and plumbing fixtures were installed. The finished building,
currently being occupied by 250 students, holds ten classrooms
and a computer
lab.
The new façade and back patio of the building were designed to
showcase the original historic brick that remained after the
fire; new brick was sandblasted to match the original. The
new building
blends the features of an historic San Jose with the look of
today's contemporary downtown.
The University staff gave the project the praise of "working perfectly for re-use." |
