Year:  Completed in 2020

Budget: $1,100,000

The existing freezer at Jefferson School District kitchen in Daly City had started to collapse when WMA was called out to look at it. WMA had worked with the Facilities Manager on a similar project at a different district and the decision was to move ahead immediately with the reconstruction. The new freezer provided an opportunity to think differently about how the district received food at the site for storage and how they managed the overall storage.

A new electric forklift, a generator back up and a central exterior secure and enclosed staging area provide the culinary staff with a clean and organized approach to get out of the elements and stage entrance into and out of the freezer.

The staff is happy with the new approach and can continue to cook healthy meals for the District’s students.

El Toro Health Science Academy

.

Location:  Morgan Hill, CA

Year:  Completed in 2017

Budget: $400,000

.

In 2017 WMA was asked to re-design the library, office and a classroom to a new Health Science Academy.  The school was constructed in the 1980’s and the opportunity to create specialized spaces and a fun interactive learning center with a very limited budget was a challenge. The five spaces created to allow for measurement and testing, science experiments, a central group area and a body lab.

Remodeled classrooms to create new Health Science Academy at El Toro Elementary School. MHUSD has developed a magnet approach to elementary learning and El Toro is the Health Science program. The program is still in its’ infancy so the space needed to be very flexible and so that each area relates and encourages curiosity and visibility into the adjacent spaces. Using clouds and hexagonal lighting the ceiling becomes an connection with our DNA. The school is coming up with words for the band at mid height that encourages students to think about science!
